Jacqui Hames offers her Top Ten Tips for safety inspired by her book Savvy
Home
1. Make sure your front door has a bolt or chain on the inside so you are protected whilst inside your house, but can still get out easily if there’s a fire.
2. If you’re unlucky enough to be burgled, have a party or re-decorate – create some new happy memories for your home.
Shopping
3. Never allow a sales assistant to take your payment card out of sight, there’s no need to these days as the pin machines are portable. You generally don’t even need to hand it to them at all.
4. When shopping on the internet check the site has full security and ‘https’ appears in the top instruction line.
Partying
5. Look after your handbag; carry a personal attack alarm, mobile (topped up and charged) and spare cash.
6. Have a contingency plan for getting home in case you get stranded.
7. Never get into an unlicensed mini cab, you wouldn’t get into any other strangers car so why do so just because he says he’s a cab driver!
Car
8. Never leave anything you would hate to lose in your car, sat navs are the latest ‘must haves’ for thieves – take it with you!
9. Avoid road rage. If you feel threatened, avoid eye contact and ignore them. If a driver gets out drive past him if it’s safe, or put the hazards lights on and reverse sounding your horn.
And finally…
10. Trust your instincts, if that offer or unsolicited competitions win looks too good to be true - it probably is, if someone looks and feels dodgy – they probably are!
