"In this new three-part series, nine illiterate adults enrol on a reading course taught by the maverick Phil Beadle, who previously appeared on TV in The Unteachables. Beadle took a six-month course to qualify as an adult literacy teacher, at the end of which he dismisses the Government's adult literacy materials as "worse than useless". He has never taught anyone to read before, but he is a born teacher: he never gives up on students and he never talks down to them. He believes in their abilities and he is painfully aware of the misery and alienation caused by illiteracy. Whin three weeks, 58-year-old Teresa, who burst into tears in her first lesson, is able to stumble through a children's book."

"Phil's the kind of stormy character you could watch all day, as he lurches around with his half-mast tie and retro sports bag, raging at the Government's policy on literacy before inspiring his class of adults with an approach designed for children.
The result is amazingly moving. Any number of newspaper columns must have tackled this subject, but none could bring it alive like a well-filmed TV series. When you see Linda - who years to read Ernest Hemingway before she can even get her "b" and "d" the right way round - finally start to crack it, it's truly heart-warming."

"Every year, more than 100,000 teenagers leave school without being able to read or write properly - but what happens next? They get added to the five million adults in Britain who can't read or write well enough to cope with the modern world - and they aren't people for whom English is a second language. Here, award-winning teacher Phil Beadle sets out to highlight this shocking state of affairs by teaching a group of adults to read and write in just six months. The process is set to bring years of frustration and anger to the surface and, from the start, it's more intense than even Beadle had ever epxpected. Linda, who is 46, adores books but can't read a word. She embarks on a life-changing and emotional journey with the inspirational Beadle at the helm.
Phil has also appeared on ‘Richard and Judy’ and on ‘This Morning’. He was nominated for BBC TV moments of the Year, and awarded best on screen newcomer in the Royal Society of Television Awards.
