Sir Roy Strong

Sir Roy Strong Image Sir Roy Strong is a well-known historian and garden writer, lecturer, critic and columnist and a regular contributor to television and radio programmes.

He was Director of the National Portrait Gallery from 1967 to 1973 and of the Victoria and Albert Museum from 1974 to 1987. In 1980 he was awarded the prestigious Shakespeare Prize by the FVS Foundation of Hamburg in recognition of his contribution to the arts in the UK. He has published a number of highly acclaimed books, most recently The Laskett, the story of the garden he built with his late wife, the film, television and theatre designer Dr. Julia Trevelyan Oman. Also Coronation: From the 8th to the 21st Century (Harper Collins 2006) and A Little History of the English Church (Jonathan Cape 2007).

In April 2008 Sir Roy appeared in the Channel 4 series The Diets that Time Forgot, where he featured as the director of the “Institute of Physical Culture”, a turn of the 20th Century health farm.

Sir Roy is also an experienced after dinner speaker and lecturer.
