Michael Brunson recently retired as ITN's Political Editor, a position which he held since 1986. As ITN's Political Editor, he reported on every recent political event in Britain. In June 1991 Michael Brunson's interview with Margaret Thatcher made headlines when she revealed to him her wish to take her seat in the House of Lords, and told him of her thoughts as her time as Prime Minister drew to a close. Brunson again interviewed Mrs Thatcher at length in November 1991, exactly a year after her dramatic resignation, in which she made known her views on European economic and monetary union. Other Stories covered include, John Major's difficulties over Europe, and the rise of New Labour under Tony Blair. In 1995, he was leader of the editorial team which won the Royal Television Society's News Event Award, for ITN's coverage the previous year of the sudden death of the Labour Leader, John Smith.
He covered the last five General Elections in the United Kingdom. In 1979 and 1983 he was the ITN reporter assigned to the Thatcher campaign, travelling throughout Great Britain with Mrs Thatcher. In subsequent elections, he was responsible for co-ordinating and presenting the daily campaign coverage on News at Ten, and, in 1997, was also the co-presenter (with Jonathon Dimbleby) if ITV's Election night results programme.
He is now a freelance writer and broadcaster. In April 2000, he published his autobiography, entitled A Ringside Seat. He and his wife Sue live in London and Norfolk; they have two sons, Jonathon and Robin. His hobbies include gardening, listening to classical music, and enjoying the North Norfolk countryside.
Michael also chairs conferences and seminars and is a highly skilled conference facilitator and after dinner speaker. He has a wealth of experience hosting events and award ceremonies, both at home and abroad.
