Dr Heather Berlin

Dr Heather Berlin is a cognitive neuroscientist and Assistant Professor of Psychiatry and Neuroscience at Mount Sinai School of Medicine in New York.

Heather is currently a presenter on the new international Discovery Channel Series, Superhuman Showdown (2012) and is a commentator on the upcoming Discovery Channel series Ed Stafford: Naked and Marooned (2013). She has also appeared on The Forum on BBC World Service and BBC Radio 4.

Heather explores the complex interactions of the human brain and mind with the goal of contributing to improved treatment and prevention of psychiatric disorders. She is also interested in the neural basis of consciousness and dynamic unconscious processes. Heather conducts neuroimaging, neuropsychological, and psychopharmacological clinical research, has published her work widely, and has been the recipient of numerous awards and fellowships. 

Heather is a Visiting Scholar at the New York Psychoanalytic Society and Institute, and was a Visiting Assistant Professor at Vassar College, and a Visiting Lecturer at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology/University of Zurich, and at The Hebrew University of Jerusalem.

Actively engaged in public outreach and communication, she is a consultant for films, screenplays, and art exhibitions involving neuroscience and psychology. A passionate advocate for women in science, Heather has spoken widely on the topic, including multiple keynote addresses at the Australian Consulate in NY and the Womensphere Emerging Leaders Global Summits.

She received her doctorate from the University of Oxford and master of public health from Harvard University. In her spare time she enjoys international travel, hiking, theatre, painting, and music.
